ITCHENOR SCHOOLS REGATTA
29 June – 2 July 2019

Saturday 29 June
The day began with us rigging the boats and the brand new sails kindly lent to us by the Club. After a small mishap of a missing tiller extension we were on our way. In some beautiful weather the three boats made their way to East head for a little lunch with others who had participated in the family East Head day.  After lunch we began the hour's journey to Itchenor with a couple of mishaps along the way: running aground, trying to avoid yachts and the odd man overboard to cool down. We then parked our boats up and went back to Emsworth to swim.

Sunday 30 June – practice day
We registered our boats, put on our racing numbers and went out. Safe to say that it was quite windy so there was no shortage of problems on the water – boats beginning to sink, capsizes and man overboard, all watched over by our safety boat. It did set us up for Monday, though.

Monday 1 July  race day
We rigged our boats in the morning ready for a beautiful day of sailing. The first start was not short of excitement; if you wanted a good start you had to thread the needle through the 85-90 boats competing.

Tuesday 2 July  race day
The second and final day of racing started off slow with very light winds. There were issues with lots of boats over the start line; when the line settled we began the race and it was very slow.

Results for Emsworth Sailors

There were 89 boats competing.  In our group we had three Club Fevas plus two others (a further one hitched a lift back on the Tuesday).

Our results are a little skewed as all our sailors missed (at least) two out of the six races:

Julian Wilcock, Euan Davies – 69th
Henry Ball, Joe Harris – 71st
Ollie Bradshaw , Ollie Greenslade – 75th

In their own boats we had:
Ollie Osgood, Holly Mitchell  – 37th (they competed in all the races)
Toby Greatorex, James Healey – 50th

The only other ESC boat I know of was Ben and Tommy Millard who came 3rd, but they were obviously far too good for our group 😊.

Overall thoughts on the weekend

A great event and we all had a ball.  A big shout out to the club for enabling our sailors to get on the water representing their schools!
