Is someone you know planning to do the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme? It maybe helpful to know that certain elements of the scheme can be achieved through sailing. In particular:

  • Physical Skills
  • Volunteering
  • Expedition sections

are all achievable.

Although Emsworth Sailing Club is not a DofE centre itself, we can help.

Most of the training courses offered by the RYA meet the Skills and/or Physical sections.  We are also looking at how the planned RYA Day Sailing award can be linked to the Expedition section.

In the training calendar we have set aside the following dates for RYA Day Sailing:

Friday 1 September
Saturday 2 September
Sunday 3 September

This RYA award covers the planning and organising of a day sailing trip in dinghies. We have decided to include camping overnight which links into the DofE Expedition section:

The Bronze award requires a 2 day/1 night expedition with 6 hours of activity each day.

The Silver award requires a 3 day/ 2 night expedition with 7 hours of activity each day.

There are plenty of opportunities to carry out this activity within Chichester Harbour. Ultimately the Gold award is likely to require sailing in the Solent.

So if the person has agreement from their DofE provider to consider such a Bronze or Silver Expedition on September 1 to 3, the Club is certainly in a position to help.

Please contact ryaprincipal@emsworthsc.org.uk to register interest.
