JUNIOR & MARTLETS NEWS
October 2017

Wow, that was a busy summer!  COW Week, Junior Race Week and more were covered in September's newsletter - here is a link to it in case you missed it: Junior News Sept 2017

Following a hugely successful summer season, it's now time to look at autumn and winter activities, and in particular to prepare for 2018.  With this in mind:

ESC Junior Section Coordinators

As many of you will know, Ann Williams has decided to stand down as our Martlets Coordinator as from the end of October.

We have decided to restructure the Junior section. With currently 387 members under the age of 18 there’s a lot of work to do. Some new roles have been introduced and we’ve found some people to fill them for 2018.

Here is a list of who’s who (which you can also find under Juniors on the website):

Director of Training - Matt Wright

Junior Coordinator - Gillian Carter

If you would also like to get involved in 2018 please contact me and let me know. All help is welcome and appreciated.

Fleet Leaders – RESPONSE REQUIRED

Our new Fleet Leaders will be finding out what training is required for their sections and communicating this to the relevant people. They may also coordinate some social events on and off the water for the Juniors in their fleet.

RESPONSE – please can you send me your child’s name and which fleet you’d like information about (Mill Pond Optimist, Harbour Optimist, Teras, Fevas).  Don’t worry if you don’t wish to be included in any of the fleets, you will still receive information about general sailing and social events.

End of Season Meeting – Saturday 28 October, 17:00

You’ll have a chance to meet some of our new team on Saturday 28 October from 5pm. This is the same evening as the fireworks so why not come along a little earlier and have a chat with your Fleet Leader and register your interest in training and events for next year.

Junior Rally – October half terms: RESPONSE REQUIRED

In previous years, we’ve held a Feva Rally during October half term. Ann and I decided that this year we would change it to a Junior Rally so all Juniors can take part in whichever boat they sail.  Instead of Martlets training, we will be putting on a coached Race Week running from the Monday to Thursday. Other local clubs will be invited to join us, too. Further information will be sent out about this in due course.

RESPONSE – Please let me know if you are interested in taking part in this event so we have an idea of numbers.

RESPONSE – If you are able to help with the event doing safety or shore duties please let me know.

RESPONSE – If you are an AI or DI and would like to help, please let me know.

Junior Captains

Our Junior Captains this year, Grace Summers and James Taylor, have been an invaluable part of the Junior team. They’ve been proactive with helping with training and events. They’ve represented our Club at various events and been great ambassadors for ESC.

We have decided to restructure the Junior Captain role, introducing a Vice Captain and keeping James and Grace on for another year to support the 2018 Captains. If you feel you can follow in their footsteps and of those before them please send me an email telling me why you are the person to represent our Club in 2018.

Winter training

The weather is already giving us a taste of what’s to come in the following months! If this doesn’t put you off sailing you can take part in our Tera Winter Sailing Programme (please contact Ann Williams) or if you’d like to join Slipper for their Feva training please contact Jon Greatorex.

Taking on board the feedback from our Chats and Dogs evening from last year, there are some great ideas being discussed for 2018,  We’ll keep you up to date with these when we have some firm plans.

Please get in touch so we can keep you up to date with the right information.

That's all from me for the moment!
